A 250cc Scooter Is As Powerful As A Lot Of Motorcycles

By Bill B. Sheers

Did you ever wonder why shoes you bought in the 1970's always seems to be in again 25 years later? Two wheelers are really the same way. The reality is, many of these companies are playing up the trend and coming out with scooters that look retro. The Metropolitan from Honda and the GVS from Vespa actually look like a form of older versions.

At just about the 20th century, scooters made there way to the market in Europe. They resembled what we think of as a moped in this day and age. A bike with a motor attached is kind of a crude way to think of it. By the late 1910's people in the USA were driving scooters, but they still never reached the popularity of the auto mobile. Here is a look at some of the better know scooters on the market today:

Cushman --The Cushman Company produced motor scooters from 1936 to 1965 and they were most widely used during WWII. If you've ever seen some of those old WWII documentaries or films, these are most likely what the GI's are cruising around on.

Mitsubishi -- One of the first scooters made in Japan was the Mitsubishi Silver Pigeon. It was a scooter largely made of warplane wheels and discarded warplane parts, believe it or not.

Vespa Motor Scooters -- If you had a scooter in Europe after WWI, it was almost certainly a Vespa. To this day, they are still one of the most popular scooters in the world.

The Honda Power-sports -- By the end of the 50's, Honda introduced the Super Cub to the world. This little scooter went on to become the best selling scooter of all-time.(worldwide) With that Honda reliablity, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one of these running today.

They have built a lot of different models since the Cub in 1958. The fact that they have sold more scooters than any other company worldwide should give you a pretty good idea of what kind of scooter you can expect from this company.

It's cool that they are bringing back the retro scooter look. Most of them are just for looks and will come with 4 stroke engines that are water cooled instead of 2 stroke engines. Fuel injection is also a key feature that has been added to the newer versions.
