Why You Need a Motorcycle Jack

By Jack Jacobs

If you've been afflicted with a burning desire to modify and upgrade your new motorcycle then don't worry, you're not alone. There is something about a new motorcycle that inspires men to want to upgrade and modify it. So if you've been wanting to dig into your motorcycle then don't worry, it's perfectly normal.

You will quickly find that if you are going to work on your own motorcycle then one tool that is indispensable is a good quality motorcycle jack. The way motorcycles are designed, you will often have to get them off the ground in order to even the most basic maintenance work and a typical automotive style jack will not work.

A good quality motorcycle jack will always have a safety lock on it that, once set, will not allow the jack to release and drop the motorcycle. It will also be equipped with a strap or a tie down of some sort that will go up and over the bike and lock it to the jack. This tie down will basically anchor the motorcycle to the jack allowing you to wrench on it and in many cases even stand on either end without the motorcycle tipping.

Don't worry that these two features are hard to find or anything like that because they are not. Just about any motorcycle jack will be equipped with these two features but just make sure that you USE them or they do you no good. I have worked on motorcycles for years and I would not consider for a second working on a motorcycle without these two features in place.

If you are concerned about the money you are spending on a motorcycle jack then you need to look at the big picture. The dealerships charge a fortune for even a simple oil change and a good Indy charges a small fortune. You will recover the investment in a motorcycle jack even changing your own oil just one or two times.

The only thing left to figure out is where to buy your motorcycle jack. You may not have many options in your home town but don't worry, you can find a great deal on a motorcycle jack online. I purchased my jack on Ebay and saved a bit over 50 dollars on it. If you do your research, find a couple of different brands that you would be good with, then go buy on Ebay and you will save yourself a lot of money.
